Plaza Ricardo Cardona
Alcala de Xivert, Castellon, Spain
1996-1997
Alcala de Xivert is a small town on the Mediterranean coast of Spain. The mayor commissioned us to design the main plaza of the town. There was an existing late nineteenth century metal structure, in a state of disrepair, occupying a quarter of the surface of the plaza. It was covered by a wood siding roof. There was a hand written sign on one of the columns saying:”prohibido jugar al futbol” – no soccer allowed.
The roof was removed and the old structure was restored. We designed a heat reflective, translucent new glass cover with the intention of uplifting the atmospheric character of the small plaza while still giving protection from the heat and the rain on open market days.
Near one of the corners of the plaza, we planted a tree in the center of a small reflective pool surrounded by concrete benches. On another corner, closer to the old structure we designed a fountain, not without some sculptural intent, where the market people can get water. The rest of the plaza was left empty.
